The Story

Heggies Vineyard is perched in the high country of Eden Valley, where the combination of cool climate and high altitude provide the perfect conditions for producing some of Australia’s finest Chardonnay. The majority of the estate is comprised of three favoured Burgundian clones that provide a range of flavour opportunities for Heggies Vineyard Chardonnay. Fruit for this wine is selected from the older blocks on the estate with a range of aspects. These blocks are characterised by their shallow topsoils which are strewn with quartz on well-drained slopes. The vines yield low crops, which consistently produce Chardonnay of outstanding flavour intensity. The combination of clones in this blend exhibits our extensive experience working with the variety in Eden Valley.

Clones

Bernard clones 95, 76 and also OF; planted 1979, 1992, 2002.

Heggies Estate Chardonnay includes clones from one of the first Bernard plantings in Australia.

Accolades

Attractive, fleshy, soft and supple core, some grip and nice acidity on the finish
Very attractive yellow-peach and citrus aromas with a thread of hazelnut. The palate has a very attractive, fleshy, soft and supple core, some grip and nice acidity on the finish. Drink now. Screw cap.

A beautifully complex style of chardonnay
A beautifully complex style of chardonnay that exhibits excellent weight and length and is a flavoursome mix of tropical fruit, stone fruit, citrus and hazelnuts.

This is a good release
Eden Valley Chardonnay from a well-known vineyard. Also known as Heggies Estate Chardonnay. Complex chardonnay with a solid core of flavour. Matchstick and toasty oak-spice notes drive straight into grilled peach and wheat. There’s a tautness to the finish which makes length difficult to assess but this is a good release of Heggies Chardonnay.

Plenty of lees and barrel work
Mid level here for the Heggies range. The Heggies Vineyard a fine site, sitting at 500 metres above sea level in the Eden Valley. Fermented and matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (28% new, 25% one year old and the rest older). The wines are crafted by Marc Van Halderen. Generous and soft nose. Plenty of lees and barrel work with soft and approachable latte cream, hazelnut butter, white dinner roll, fresh cotton sheets with support from the nectarine stone fruit, lemon pith and struck match flintiness. Fine interplay of richer winemaking influence and tangy fruit resulting in a jostling for position in this youthful frame. The finish is lean and focused with good drive.

A smart Eden Valley Chardonnay
There is a charm here. A little flint, a little matchstick too. Soft creaminess sways throughout with a neat complexity in the mid-palate to muse over. Wild fermentation took place in French oak where it cooled its heels for eleven months. Soft white-fleshed nectarine fruit is bordered by lemon juice and subtle nuttiness leading to a long finish. That citrusy tang just lingers with an acidity that is just a tad firm for now. All up, it's moreish and delicious, a smart Eden Valley Chardonnay. Drink to five years+

A fabulously drinkable wine
From the start this Eden Valley chardonnay shows a subtle degree of winemaking influence; just a little but perfectly judged to bring it up to the next level of sophistication. Has that stone fruit and cashew mix with a subtle trace of gun smoke and struck match, minerality. The palate is seamlessly structured with a quite delicate mouthfeel reflecting the three Burgundian clones that are used. A precise and linear palate structure completes a fabulously drinkable wine.
